We are currently developing alternatives to combat the plant parasitic pathogen, root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. Our research has established proof of concept for four different products and are in the process of establishing field trials data for registration of our products. Root knot nematodes account for about 12.3% crop loss globally that is in the range of $167 billion and in India the losses are in the range of Rs. 21,068.73 million annually. The major crops affected in India are capsicum, tomato, chilli, okra, gherkins, muskmelon, watermelon, carnations, roses, gerbera and anthuriums. Nematode problems in these crops have reached an unprecedented level, wherein a loss of about 80% in crop yield has been reported in crops grown in protected conditions. It has also been reported that, nematode infestation makes the crop more sensitive to fungal infestations which leads to an increased crop loss. Considering these crop losses, Telluris Biotech India Private Limited is involved in developing integrated pest management strategies with products majorly targeting the root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita.
Bacterial food borne pathogens have been the major cause for outbreaks of human illness associated by food contamination. Almost 200 diseases are transmitted through food products pathogens causing around 9,000 deaths each year. In India, Listeriosis has been a growing concern as sporadic cases of Listeria outbreak have been reported. The evidence of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat food suggests that there is a cause to believe its presence in food processing facilities. Majority of the outbreaks are usually unreported and generally go undetected. This makes it very difficult in controlling the outbreaks, identification and dissemination of the causative sources which can potentially lead to future outbreaks. One third of pediatric admissions and 17% of all pediatric deaths are diarrhea related. An earlier detection of bacteria in processed and semi-processed food can greatly help in controlling potential outbreaks related to food borne pathogens. At Telluris Biotech India Private Limited, our goal is to develop protocols for two molecular methodologies to simultaneously detect Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes within a single food sample at various stages of the food processing chain.
